John Lynch was born in Melbourne, Australia and began viola studies at the Victorian College of the Arts School. As a founding member of the Binneas String Quartet he studied chamber music in 1988 at the Liszt Academy, Budapest with Andras Mihaly. In 1991 he studied at the Freiburg Hochschule fur Musik, Germany, with American violist Kim Kashkashian and participated in masterclasses with Yuri Bashmet in Sienna, Italy, where he performed Shostakovich's Viola Sonata with pianist Mikhail Muntyan who premiered the work in 1975. The Binneas Quartet performed at festivals in Spoleto, Banff, Melbourne and Orford and were prizewinners at the Shostakovich String Quartet Competition in St. Petersburg in 1987. He has also appeared with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Gavin Bryars Ensemble and at the festival 'Music by the Red Sea' in Israel, under conductor Lorin Maazel. John is currently Associate Principal Viola with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and teaches at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. Recent chamber music appearances have included artists such as John O'Conor, Hugh Tinney, Fionnuala Hunt, Catherine Leonard, the St. Petersburg String Quartet and members of the Vienna Phillharmonic Orchestra.
